WYCOMBE WANDERERS YOUTH TEAM
at the JET 2000 TOURNAMENT
HAMAR - NORWAY - JULY 2000

SUMMARY of Wycombe's Jet 2000 tournament:
reporting for Chairboys on the Net in Norway

Lewis Cook - best goal for Wycombe - picture Allan AasterudThe best goal: Lewis Cook's match winning goal against Brann. He ran the ball forward, also involving Leeyon Phelan and finally shot the ball behind the goalie.

The best player: Central defender Roger Johnson played well in every match. "He'll play in the first team before the end of the year. Roger, Ben and Ian were solid, but I still expect more from them" Goodchild said.

Mr. Versatile: Team-captain Ben Townsend played right-back, left back, central defender, left midfield and central midfield.

Disappointing: Leeyon Phelan is named a rising star within the club, but he never impressed in Norway. No goals, one red card and much frustration were the cold facts. "He had some poor games during our stay. I know what he's capable of, so that's why I'm very disappointed. But he's a fighter, and his days will come" Goodchild said.

Comeback: Ian Simpemba served a one game suspension, but came back and scored two goals and man of the match against Eik.

Deadball: Wycombe scored almost all the goals on deadball situations (freekicks or corners)

The bench holding their stomachs in - picture Allan AasterudFunniest: The old man who tried to pick up the ball in the Eik game. The ball went out of the pitch, and the old man ran after it. His 80 years old legs got tired and stiff after only 10 metres running. He lost his balance, and fell on the ground, landing on his face first. His falling technique was really a funny sight, and the lads burst out into a fit of laughter. Laughing so much that tears popped up! Goodchild and Cole were lying on the grass and holding their stomachs. They laughed so much that they had balance problems!

Up-and-Down: Young Johnny Dixon started this tournament by scoring both goals against Ham Kam. In the other matches, he hardly came in scoring-position.

Best performance: The second half against Brann. Played with 10 men, and won after an excellent goal and lots of hard work.

Worst mistake: The tacticial maneuvers in front of and during the Moss game? Ian Simpemba`s red card against Brann after 20 minutes? Steve Williams' mistimed clearance? Or Jack Smillie and his missed match winning goal against Raufoss?

Referees: None involved in Wycombe Wanderers' Youth Team were impressed by the Norwegian referees. They didn't allow anything, and the frustration among the players increased for each game. Wycombe twice had a player sent off.

Most impressive: -- Jack "Karaoke Kid" Smillie was impressive at the Karaoke bar. He did a thing of his own up on the stage. "If he doesn't succeed with his football, he could consider going into music. Ha, ha!" Goodchild said.

Most goals: Both John Dixon and Peter Holsgrove scored three goals each.

Impressive: Goalie Mark Osborn kept a clean sheet during the four matches he played.

Frustrated: Gary Goodchild was not a happy man after the poor performances against Moss and Raufoss.

Unlucky: Roger Johnson wanted to place the penalty-kick elegantly up the right corner. His mis-kick hit both the post and the cross-bar at the same time.

Best question: Youth team secretary Gary Trimby who suddenly asked me: "Why do you actually follow Wycombe Wanderers around?! You're not doing it for money?... To be honest, I can't quite understand" Trimby said.

Best answer: -- "I do it because I love the English people, and I love the English game of football. Football is life, you make friends and lots of fun. I think upon myself as half British, and I proud of it" I replied.

Finally, I wish the players, coaching-staff and the supporters at Wycombe Wanderers good luck in the forthcoming season in England.

You'll Never Walk Alone!

Best wishes, Allan
