YOUTHS
OFF TO WINNING START
(Wednesday 5th July 2000) Ham-Kam (Norway) 0 Wycombe Wanderers 2 reporting for Chairboys on the Net in Norway Allan Aasterud The hosts, Ham-Kam, are outsiders in this tournament; small skillful quick players, and the manager also had three players from neighbour clubs on trial. The Norwegians dominated the first ten minutes of the game, but seldom created any dangerous opportunities. Rock-solid central defenders Roger Johnson and Marc Leach looked very comfortable. The game is played 2 halves of 25 minutes, and the Brits dominated the second part of the first half. Especially striker Johnny Dixon who was lively up front and started to create some big chances. What a pace! I think he gave the right back plenty of head-aches because of some massive runs. Dixon finally gave Wycombe the lead after 22 minutes. A long throw in was headed up in the air, Dixon stood there, the ball landed and he simply knocked it into the net. Second half was an impressive performance by the guests from Wycombe. It turned out to be a quality work-out! Ham-Kam rarely tested goalie Mark Osborn. Again Dixon showed his goalscoring talents five minutes into this half, this time with a brilliant header after captain Ben Townsend's well taken corner-kick. Wycombe Team (4-3-3): Mark Osborn - Ben Townsend, Marc Leach (sub 26 John Hopcraft),Roger Johnson, Ronnie Grivan - Scott Dash (sub 35 Jack Smillie), Ian Simpempa, Ryan McCullaugh (sub 26 Richard Jolly), Peter Holsgrove (sub 26 Lewis Cook), John Dixon, Leeyon Phelan. Tactics: Wycombe played 4-3-3 the first 25 minutes. Then Mr. Goodchild made three substitutes, made some tactical changes and played 4-4-2. That must have suited midfielder Ian Simpemba because he played very well in the second half. "The lads suit every tactic, but the most important is to work hard and develop their technical skills. That means keeping the ball on the ground" said the Wycombe Manager. My men of the match: Experienced players like Johnson and Townsend played well. The same did Dixon who scored two goals. But I was most impressed by the youngest squad member Lewis Cook. The 15 years old left footer must have a bright future ahead of him! He played the second half, and his dribbles and crosses caused a lot of problems for Ham-Kam. Reaction and comment from Youth Team boss Gary Goodchild Return to News Desk... |
