"WE HAVE
TO LEARN" - GOODCHILD
(Wednesday 5th July 2000) Brann Bergen (Norway) 0 Wycombe Wanderers 1 reporting for Chairboys on the Net in Norway Allan Aasterud After the 1-0 victory over Brann, Wycombe Youth Team Manager Gary Goodchild said "We have travelled a long way to get to Hamar and Norway. With six points and already through to the second phase of the tournament, I'm pleased." He admitted that his team in the first 25 minutes was terrible to watch. "What can I say? Obviously, we weren't neither mentally or physically prepared for this game. You see, we experiment during this tournament" He told me that before the game he had said to the players that it was up to themselves to decide how to prepare a warm-up. "We have to learn, and to be honest, the idea didn't work out at all! We were lucky that we could go to halftime with 0-0. By the way, I don't feel sorry for Ian (Simpemba). It was correct decisions, but hopefully he'll learn something from the suspension" Goodchild explained. The manager had a tough pep talk at halftime, and made some tactical changes. "Playing 4-4-1 fits us perfect. After a poor 25 minutes, we started to show some pride and will. We had a couple of good chances, Brann none! We scored after a great move, and it's good to be at the top of the group" Some of the youngest Wycombe-players looked tired after intense training during the last couple of days and busy travelling. Like young Johnny Dixon who left the pitch at halftime. "I can't wait to fall a sleep tonight. It's demanding to focus on two matches including preparations and travelling" Dixon said. At the age of sixteen he will be taken good care of. He didn't mind sitting on the sideline, in sunny weather, and watch his team-mates sweating. "No, it's quite nice sitting here at the moment. I definitely like Norway. It's so quiet and clean. And the fresh air...Wonderful!" Return to tournament preview and match index Return to News Desk... |
