"I HATE TO
LOSE" - GOODCHILD
(Thursday 6th July 2000) Moss (Norway) 2 Wycombe Wanderers 1 reporting for Chairboys on the Net in Norway Allan Aasterud Three late goals from Brann had squeezed Wycombe out of the A-finals, because Brann had scored one goal more! A disappointed Gary Goodchild couldn't believe what he had just heard from the officials after the match. "I hate to lose, but today we deserved it. We weren't at the level I was hoping for. Is it tiredness? Or lack of stamina? I don't know, but something was wrong" he said. "Our passing ability was poor, everything went wrong and we didn't work hard either. We can't stop running, and I expect more from my players" He looked quite calm and controlled, despite a poor game and the news about Brann. "We didn't deserve to win. Moss were older and more experienced than us. With one players suspended, we had just three subs to use. I saw the players were really tired at the end." The Brann win means that Wycombe play in the B-finals in the second phase. Personally I think that's good for the lads. All 24 teams hold high quality anyway. They will now meet teams that are a bit younger and smaller. That will increase the self confidence of the lads again. "This is far better than doing pre-season training back in England, that's for sure! My goal was to reach the A-finals. Now, I have a new goal, I want to win this B-finals second phase" Goodchild said. From the players point of view: I think it's good for young players like Johnny Dixon and Lewis Cook to play in the B-finals. Now they will get more space up front. But I feel sorry for ambitious and experienced youth players like Johnson, Simpemba, Townsend, Phelan and Osborn who were very upset when they found out that Wycombe had been knocked out of the A-finals. "Silly game! I came here to play against the best players. I'm really disappointed," said Roger Johnson. Final Group Table
