Originally started his professional football career with Sunderland but failed to make the First Team and joined non-League Scarborough in 1989. Eventually made his Football League debut following a move to Northampton Town towards the start of the 1991/92 season. Went on to have spells with Preston North End, Lincoln City, Mansfield Town, Doncaster Rovers and Halifax Town. During a Football League Trophy tie for Doncaster in November 2005 away to Cambridge United he suffered a broken leg that effectively ended his playing career. Named as substitute goalkeeper for Wanderers on several occasions and finally got his chance when he came on as substitute for the injured Alex Lynch in the League Two game at Plymouth Argyle on 30th January 2016. His appearance that day made him the oldest Wycombe player to appear in the Football League - his age then of 46 years and nearly six months, beating the previous record held by Rob Lee of 40 years and 87 days in the penultimate game of the 2005/6 season.
