Background: A rare signing of quality by Alan Smith, arriving from Brighton & Hove Albion for a tribunal set fee of £100,000. The former Republic of Ireland Under 21 International joined Brighton as trainee in 1989 and went on to make close to 200 appearances for the South Coast side.
What we think: After an indifferent start at Wycombe, went on to command a place in the centre of defence. Injury forced him out of the side towards the end of the 1997/98 campaign but he won his place back during the 1998/99 season and under Lawrie Sanchez has become key player and a firm favourite with the the fans. During the 2000/2001 season bagged eight goals including six during the run to the Semi-Final of the FA Cup where he stepped up to legend status amongst Wycombe players. Was finally edged out of the side during the second-half of the 2002/3 campaign after a series of niggling injuries seemed to affect his form. Unfortunately out of contract at the end of the same season and was shown the door as part of a cost cutting exercise. Will always be remembered as a Wycombe hero and a player whose experienced help nuture the talents of younger defenders such as Roger Johnson.
