WANDERERS OPEN AT
CARDIFF (Thursday 21st June 2001) ![]() The Club have been granted an away fixture due to the building work taking place on the 'away-end' at Adams Park but it's a potentially tough start for The Wanderers against the newly promoted Bluebirds. During the summer they've brought in left-sided defender Michael Simpkins on a free from Chesterfield and goalkeeper Neil Alexander for a £130,000 fee from Scottish side Livingston. They join last season's signings which include David Hughes (£450,000 from Shrewsbury), Gavin Gordon (£275,000 from Lincoln) and Leo Fortune-West (£300,000 from Rotherham). Add to this former Cardiff trainee Robert Earnshaw, who bagged 25 goals last term and you have a game that Lawrie Sanchez will not have wanted. The Wanderers haven't won their opening game of the season since 1994 when Cambridge United were thrashed 3-0 in the first ever Division Two campaign. Sanchez will also be looking to mastermind a first ever win for The Wanderers at Ninian Park in three attempts. Wanderers' last visit in March 2000 ended 2-2 after The Bluebirds snatched a last minute equaliser.
