WORTHINGTON CUP DRAW
(Tuesday 19th June 2001)
The Worthington Cup Wycombe have been drawn at home to Bristol Rovers in the First Round of the Worthington Cup. This season the two legged games in the earlier rounds have been scrapped in favour of a one-off game. Wycombe sent 'The Gas' down last season with a 2-1 victory at the Memorial Stadium in May. However, earlier in the season, Wycombe went down 1-0 to Rovers at Adams Park in a game marred by the controversial sending off of Andy Rammell. The tie will be played on Tuesday 21st August and is likely to be the first game to take place at Adams Park under the upgraded floodlights.

Last season Rovers reached the Third Round after dismissing Plymouth Argyle in the First Round, followed by a memorable penalty shoot-out victory over Everton in Round Two. The run was finally ended when Sunderland came away with a 2-1 success at The Memorial Stadium.

The Wanderers record in the Worthington Cup/League Cup isn't too bright, having never progressed beyond the Second Round in eight attempts. Last season Barnet were edged out in the First Round before a narrow defeat to eventual finalists Birmingham City in the Round Two. The previous season included a memorable victory over Wolves at Molineux before defeat to West Brom, both over two legs. Previous to this there has been Second Round defeats at the hands of Nottingham Forest and Manchester City.

Lawrie Sanchez, always one keen to wipe away records, has set reaching the Third Round of this competition as one of his targets for the season, although the League remains his priority.

Other highlights of the First Round draw include a visit to Burnley for newly promoted Rushden and Diamonds while Millwall are at home to Cardiff.
