What we think: When the news of Matt Lawrence's move to Millwall in March 2000 broke, it came as a major shock to Wycombe fans. Since returning to Wycombe from Fulham in October 1998, Matty had become an automatic choice in the Wycombe defence and was liked and respected by the vast majority of Wycombe fans. His only down side was the occasional 'red mist' syndrome that resulted in several yellow cards and few red while at Wycombe.
Originally signed by Alan Smith he was then dispensed by John Gregory. His time at Fulham taught him a thing or two - winning their Young Player of the Season award for 1997/98 and Neil Smillie brought him back to Adams Park. To complete his collection of Wycombe Managers he won the praises of Lawrie Sanchez who reluctantly let him go to The New Den in order to 'balance the books' at Wycombe.
