Background:
Central defender who originally joined Wanderers on loan from Charlton Athletic in February 2012. Remained until the end of 2011/12 season and was signed on a permament two year deal in July 2012 following his release from Charlton.

Began his pro career with Luton Town, initally playing as a striker and making his First Team debut as substitute in 2-0 home defeat to Millwall on 2 September 1997. Played more than 80 times for The Hatters before former Luton Manager David Pleat signed him for Spurs in March 2000 by in a £1m deal. He made his Spurs debut as substitute in a 3-1 defeat at Manchester United in May 2000. Doherty went on to command a regular place in the First Team at White Hart Lane but had a set-back in September 2001 when he broke his leg in the opening 10 minutes of a League Cup meeting with Torquay United at White Hart Lane. Eventually returned to First Team duties in April 2002 and eventually switching to a defensive role before being sold to newly promoted Norwich City at the start of the 2004/05 season for an undisclosed fee.

The Irish born player made his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland side in April 2000. After overcoming his leg injury, he retuned to Ireland to score his first international goal against the USA but missed out on playing in the 2002 World Cup Finals. He totalled 33 International caps between 2000 and 2005 - scoring 4 times.

Became a regular in the Norwich side, totalling more than 200 appearances and winning the Supporters Player of the Season award in 2005/6. At the start of the 2009/10 season he was given the Club captaincy by Brian Gunn but new Manager Paul Lambert dropped him from that role on his arrival at Carrow Road in August 2009 and he was informed by Lambert he had no future at the club. However, injuries forced Lambert to eat his words and recall Doherty to the side and he remained there for the rest of the season, scoring seven goals as City won the League One title. He was released by City in May 2010.

After a possible move to play for the New York Red Bulls in the US fell through, Doherty moved to Charlton in July 2010 on a free transfer. He went to play more than 40 times for Charlton before his loan move to Wycombe on 24 February 2012. He made his debut for the Wanderers alongside fellow Charlton loanee Paul Hayes during a 5-0 home victory over Hartlepool United - scoring and being awarded the Man of the Match.
