Background: Former trainee at Bristol City who went on to make over 150 First Team appearances for the Ashton Gate club. Was actually offered a new deal at City at the end of the 2003/4 season but after having limited First Team opportunities decided on the move to Wycombe. He told the Bucks Free Press at the time of signing for Wycombe "Tony (Adams) said he was rebuilding and it would be good to get promoted and go straight back up." Burnell also wants to regain First Team status, adding "I wasn't happy sitting on the bench and I wanted first team football. The manager Danny Wilson left as well, which didn't help, though I still probably would have gone." Being under 24 at the time of the transfer meant that Wycombe had to negotiate a compensation fee for the player. However, this was waived by Bristol City who preferred to see their former player gain regular football. City will instead receive a percentage of any transfer fee should he leave Wycombe. |
