Wanderers confirmed the signing of the 34 year old during kit 'launch day' at Adams Park on Sunday 10th July 2016. 'The Beast' had attained cult status during his 13 year professional career and joined Wanderers on a one year deal having been released from promoted Wimbledon at the end of the 2015/16 season. The 16 stone striker will be no stranger to Wanderers followers having been on the opposing side in games versus Swansea, Gillingham, Northampton and The Dons in the previous ten seasons. Commenting on the signing, Manager Gareth Ainsworth said: "Everybody knows what Bayo is about and I’m so excited to have him here because he’s the right signing at the right time for us. I believe that bringing Bayo to the club shows our intent to give it a real push to go bigger and better than what we achieved last season. With Dayle Southwell, Paris Cowan-Hall and Myles Weston also coming into the club this summer, I’m delighted with the way we’ve been able to strengthen our attacking options and I know this signing in particular will get people talking. Bayo has had a phenomenal career and still has plenty to offer, not just on the pitch but also in the changing room because of his character and real leadership qualities." Awarded a new one year contract in April 2017 following a successful first season at Adams Park where he finished as top scorer in all competitions, with 18 goals. Commenting on the new deal, Akinfenwa said: "I know sometimes the strikers get the plaudits, but the work that goes on by everyone is incredible. When we cross that line we are together, and I want to thank everyone; the staff, the players and the fans. As long as I feel fit and I feel strong I'll be out there, and I'm delighted I'm going to be here next season." He had an even better 2017/18 season, bagging 17 goals in the League as Wanderers gained automatic promotion to League One. He was rewarded on 14th April 2018 with a one year extension to his contract and further honoured when named in the Football League 'Team of the Season' across all three divisions. Continued to be a influential player for Wanderers in 'League One' during 2018/19 - scoring 8 goals in all competitions and finishing top scorer at the Club. On 12th June 2019 the 37-year-old was rewarded with a new one year deal with Wanderers. Commenting at the time, Manager Gareth Ainsworth said: "People have been writing Bayo off since he first pulled on a pair of football boots, but he continues to deliver year after year and he’s such a huge part of what we’ve been building here, so I’m delighted to keep him here. He brings so much to the club, on and off the pitch, and I know how popular he is with the rest of the squad, all the staff, and all of the supporters, and I firmly believe he’s still got what it takes to be a real driving force for us again next season.” External links: Wikipedia Soccerbase |
