Wycombe Wanderers 2
Saturday 31st August 2002
Football League Division Two
Dannie Bulman
Dannie Bulman gave Wycombe a dream start at Boundary Park.
Wanderers stunned their critics on Saturday with a thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory at Boundary Park. Dannie Bulman gave Wycombe a dream start on 4 minutes with a 20 yard effort and substitute Richard Harris wrapped things up in the 85th minute when he smashed Michael Simpson's low cross into the top corner of the Oldham net.
Lawrie Sanchez named an unchanged line-up to the XI that had beaten QPR the previous Monday - sticking with the three pronged attack of Sean Devine, Craig Faulconbridge and Andy Rammell. The only change was on the bench where Andy Thomson replaced Keith Ryan who cried off with a tummy bug on the morning of the game.
Wanderers got off to a dream start when after only 4 minutes when Dannie Bulman struck home from around 20 yards with a shot that skidded under Aussie 'keeper Les Pogliacomi. It was the first goal that Oldham had conceeded since the opening day of the season. Two minutes later Bulman could have made it 2-0 when he fired over after Darren Currie and worked the ball out from deep on the left side to Craig Faulconbridge who laid the ball off to Bulman.
Oldham thought they had equalised on 12 minutes when ex-Leeds United striker Clyde Wijnhard had the ball in the net from Killen's cross but it was ruled out for offside by the officials.
A minute later a Chris Vinnicombe cross saw Faulconbridge go close although Andy Rammell looked better placed. Wanderers own Aussie 'keeper, Frank Talia, then showed his worth on 16 minutes with a spectacular plamed save from a Killen header to stun the home fans.
Oldham continued to come back into the game when Lorenco stabbed an effort wide on 29 minutes after Talia had blocked Appleby's first shot. However, Wanderers finished the half on the attack with Faulconbridge in the thick of it as he nearly forced Michael Clegg into an own goal.
Half-time Oldham 0 Wycombe 1
Wijnhard skewed a ahot wide eleven minutes into the second-half before Wycombe made their first change of the afternoon when Richard Harris replaced Rammell. Lawrie Sanchez then changed the formation when he took off Sean Devine to be replaced by Mark Rogers.
With a more conventional line-up Wycombe looked a more solid outfit and the home side had limited chances. Indeed Wycombe had a great chance to make it 2-0 on 77 minutes when Faulconbridge's right footed effort was saved by Pogliacomi.
The nearest Oldham came to equalising was on 80 minutes when Harris sliced a clearance against his own cross-bar but it was Harris who sealed the three points for Wycombe when he fired home into the top corner from inside of the penalty area after taking a couple of attempts to control Michael Simpson's low ball in following a pass from Faulconbridge.
Wayne Andrews hit the cross bar for the home side with a couple of minutes on the clock but it wasn't to be their day and Wycombe were well worth the three points. The first away victory since Bournemouth on 16th February 2002 moves Wanderers to 9th place in the Division Two table.
