MARK PHILO TRIBUTES
WANDERERS FANS

(First published 24th January 2006)
Tributes left at Adams Park for Mark More written tributes left by Wycombe supporters in memory of Mark Philo who tragically died on 14th January 2006.

My eldest daughter and myself had the very good fortune of meeting Mark at the Paddocks Hospital, he was there for a check up on his ankle. My daughter Stevie (12) and Mark sat talking for 20 minutes or so while I was otherwise engaged. I returned to find them deep in conversation, to be told I was too quick, they were just getting to the juicy Wanderers gossip. Mark was so friendly towards us both and such a wonderful person to talk to. That meeting meant the world to Stevie. At the next game we attended Mark was sitting in the stands about 20 metres from us, however he spotted Stevie and blew her a kiss. You can only imagine what that meant to her. At following games he always made time to talk to us and really made us feel special. I cannot say enough good things about Mark, he was a special human being. Mark will be greatly missed by the Veil family and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family. Charlie, Carol, Stevie and Chloe Veil

Our condolences go to Mark's family and everyone involved in the tragic events of Saturday. From everyone at Dr. Challoners Grammar School wycombe4ever111

I would like to say rip mark philo he was a talented player and will be very much missed. he now joins the greatest footballers like bestie in heaven. nickienoo

I can remember Mark as a very talented player when he joined as a youngster. He like all the boys were full of fun causing a few telling offs in the Tunnel area I used to look after before moving away to Somerset, but what a footballing talent I am sure he would have progressed alot further, My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends and the Football club Terry Allen

Although we only knew Mark for a short time, he made an impact on all of the girls at Chelsea with his polite, friendly and enthusiastic manner. He was great company and will be greatly missed. A tragic waste of not just his talent, but more importantly of a kind and genuine human being. I hope you are at peace Mark. Nadia x

Just back from holiday. Got the text saying we'd beaten Notts County as I got off the plane in Fuerteventura, I was on top of the world. Then got a text from my son telling me of Mark's death, I couldn't (probably didn't want too) fight back the tears whilst waiting for the luggage. Nobody who saw it will ever forget him making Primus and the rest of the Pompey defence look like statues. A great loss to WWFC but more importantly, to his family and friends. 25% Blue

It's been eight days since Mark died. Each day I've woken up, the reality that Mark has gone has hit me again, that it wasn't a horrific nightmare and that he really has gone. Every day it seems to be getting harder, trying to accept and understand that he has gone. I feel like a little bit of a fraud, I only spoke to Mark a couple of times. Once in a HMV music shop in Reading just after we had played our final league game at Peterborough. I knew it was Mark straight away, that trademark smile, unmistakable. He was wearing a pink t-shirt too. I've always been wary talking to Wycombe players, it's a weird relationship when you've been singing their name and then you're talking one-on-one, so I was a little nervous but I introduced and he seemed surprised that I'd recognised him. I remember thinking that Mark had seemed tentative during parts of the game at London Road so I said "you need to get stuck on more" and that he had the beating of that defender every time. He took it in the way it was intended and we talked for ten minutes. I remember Mark seemed genuinely interested in what I was saying, taking part in the conversation. The second time was outside Adams Park and he was on crutches after his injury. I asked him how he was doing, when he'd be fit and ready to return. Despite the injury that smile was still there, and I could feel his excitement and desire to get back out there, to play football once again.
We are all feeling the pain and loss and the sight of the players on Saturday kicking off with tears running will stay with me for a long time. Upon leaving Underhill on Saturday I was walking, lost in my own thoughts when I looked up and for a couple seconds I thought I saw Mark right there in front of me. I then realised that it was Mark's brother Matthew. I saw the tears in his eyes and jnust wanted to hug him and say something to comfort him. But what could I say? How do you comfort a 15 year old who has lost his brother? I didn't feel I should intrude so I just carried on walking, realising that however upset I might feel I cannot begin to imagine how his family and friends (including the players) must feel and and what they have to do to cope with Mark's loss.
Mark at the WWISC Xmas party 2005 - picture supplied with permission by wwisc.co.ukMark's 21 years were a triumph, from living the dream of playing for Wycombe Wanderers, his volunteer work with the Mobile Youth Project to the way he touched every he met with that infectious smile.
I pray Mark's family and friends find the strength they need, when they say goodbye to him on Thursday, at birthday's and christmas, when they look to play that pass in training, every time he comes int their thoughts and every single second in between and from now on. My thoughts and prayers are with you all, I will never forget your Son, Brother, Friend, our wonderful talented young player and fine human being.
Please forgive the indulgence of this whole post and the picture of Mark. The picture is how I how I remember him, bringing joy and happiness to everyone who had the pleasure to be in the presence of his company and to his engimatic, beautiful smile. Mark, I might shed tears of sadness, but I am so honoured to have met and spoken with you and I shall remember you not with tears but with a smile.
Rest in peace Mark.
