THE SALTERGATE FILES
(Saturday 22nd March 2003)
Lawrie Sanchez consults the fans at SaltergateChesterfield away on Saturday 22nd March 2003 will be remembered by Wanderers followers for not only a shambolic 4-0 defeat but also what turned out to be one of the most bizzare post match scenes witnessed in modern times at the Club.
At the final whistle Wanderers' Manager Lawrie Sanchez ushered his players over to the 200 or so Wycombe fans still in the ground. The theory, according to the Wycombe boss in his subsequent post match press conference, was to make the players apologise for the performance. Sanchez said "I thought it was important that the fans had the chance to have their say to the players. The players cushion themselves too much you know, some of them think they've played well there you know, hard as it is to believe, there's one or two there who think they've done ok, you know. So it gave the fans a chance to get it off their chests, their thoughts and I thought the fans were pretty kind with them to be honest."
Lawrie Sanchez listens to the fans at Saltergate Indeed the reality of the situation was that some fans where more interested in discussing why the Wycombe Manager had watched much of the game from the stands and had allegedly not taken the half-time team-talk. Asked by BBC Three Counties reporter Ewan Duncan on what happened, Sanchez said "I spoke to them, as much you can talk to them in that situation but there was a frank exchange of views and it was their chance to get it off their chest, and you don't get often that so they've had their chance today."
Other Wycombe followers questioned the use of a triple substitution after Wanderers had conceded the second goal. But Sanchez defended his decision by pin pointing the absence of Michael Simpson from the midfield as the crux of the problem, commenting "Some of the players earn their money on the back of Simo. The midfield has been second best for the past three games". The Chesterfield game was the final game of Simpson's three match suspension and the Wycombe Manager will be delighted to see him back in the side, adding "Without Simmo we look lightweight, incompetant, non-combative and second best." And he went on to say "The midfield was non-existent today and when fans question my substitution of midfield players, I can only assume they know very little about the game."
The Wycombe boss also seems set on making the players make up for what he described as "The worst performance of the season", adding "The players need to give something back for performances like that, it's not enough to just take your money and say thanks very much I was poor this week but I'll be better next week and we'll try and do something this week."
Since the impromptu terrace forum, Club Captain Keith Ryan has apologised to Wycombe supporters via the local press and confirmed that the squad had held a meeting to discuss the situation. He added "It was a poor performance and it won't happen again" Wycombe supporters will have a chance of more formal discussion with Club Officials on Thursday 17th April 2003 when a Fans Forum has been arranged in the Vere Suite at Adams Park. The forum will follow the traditional format and it's promised that Lawrie Sanchez and Club Chairman Ivor Beeks will be in attendance. The forum will start at 7.30pm.
