SANCHEZ SET FOR CLEAR-OUT
(Thursday 20th March 2002) Lawrie Sanchez is set for another massive summer clear-out of players as he starts planning for the 2002/3 campaign. Sanchez's 'three year plan' to get Wanderers into Division One culminates at the end of next season and he wants a squad that can challenge and maintain a place in the promotion places. Eight of the current First Team squad are out of contract at the end of this season and it's understood there could be surprise exits for both Andy Baird and Jason Cousins. Baird has struggled to regain full fitness since returning to action in January and could be seen as surplus to requirements. Meanwhile, Cousins, who is in his testimonial season, has always been regarded as a second choice defender by Sanchez and could depart as the Wycombe boss attempts to free up some cash for new players. Club Stalwart Dave Carroll could also have played his last First Team game for Wycombe, although there has been talk of the great man being lined up for a Reserve or Youth Team role within the Club. Youth Teamers Leeyon Phelan, Marc Leach, Ian Simpemba and 'keeper Steve Williams are all favourites to be shown the door after being given limited First Team opportunities. Phelan has played just seven minutes in the Football League this season and is thought to have already left the Club. Simpemba has featured throughout the season for the Republic of Ireland Under 19's but has yet to make his First Team debut and it will be touch and go if he is kept on. Only goalkeeper Martin Taylor is thought to be in-line for an extension. The 35 year old says he wants a new three year deal with The Wanderers. Sanchez main priority throughout the summer will be to get in a striker who can get well into double figures. Sanchez will also be hoping that the Rammell and Devine partnership can kick-off. He said "We’re going to be doing a lot of work during the summer with them both and that will help immensely. If Andy can harness his fitness and be alongside Sean, that will be tremendous." Last summer Sanchez chased Bristol Rovers powerhouse forward Nathan Ellington and it's that type of player that will be high on Sanchez's shopping list.
