Career summary at Wycombe. (up to end of 2007/8 season) 48 appearances - 6 goals |
The former Spurs trainee joined Wycombe in a frenzy of publicity in June 2007 after Wanderers Manager Paul Lambert bought him south of the border following a successful spell with St Mirren. Younger brother of former Norwich, Blackburn, Chelsea and Celtic striker, Sutton had been top scorer with St Mirren for the last two seasons and was reported to have rejected a new two year deal at Love Street in favour of his move to Wycombe. After his time at Spurs, eventually ended up at Raith Rovers but was involved in a £60,000 move to Millwall in January 2004 before returning north in August 2005 to join St Mirren where he helped them to promotion to the SPL. On capturing Sutton on a two year deal, Lambert said, "This is fantastic news. John could have joined clubs much higher up the Football League but he's opted to come to us. He had an excellent record in the Scottish Premier League and I've always liked him. He'll get goals - but he can also bring other players into the game. He's a perfect target man." Meanwhile, Sutton said, "I had interest from other clubs but I don't want to comment about them because I chose to come here because I think this is the best place for me." He added, "Possibly I could have gone a couple of divisions higher or stayed in Scotland but I've come to somewhere where I think I will be most succesful over the next couple of years." After a disappointing first season at Wycombe, coupled with the departure of Paul Lambert, Sutton was soon out of favour with new Manager Peter Taylor and shortly after speculation of move back north, on the 19th August 2008 it was announced that his contract had been 'terminated by mutual consent'. Later that day it was confirmed that Scottish Premier League side Motherwell, managed by Mark McGhee, had agreed a three year deal for the 24 year old.
