Background: A former trainee at Crystal Palace where he progressed through Youth and Reserve team football to be given his First Team debut by Palace boss Peter Taylor as a substitute in a Football League cup tie against Notts County on 22nd August 2006. He went on to make his Football League debut at Elland Road when Palace took on Leeds United on 10th February 2007. In April 2007 Spence travelled to the USA to appear for Palace's feeder club Crystal Palace Baltimore but he returned early after picking up an injury.
Became Peter Taylor's first signing as Wycombe Manager when he agreed a two year deal on 16th June 2008 in preference of staying at Selhurst Park. Spence commented, "I could have stayed at Palace and there were a couple of other Football League clubs interested but as soon as I knew Wycombe were in for me it was no contest." He added, "I have come here to get regular first team football. It is going to be tough because there are a lot of good midfielders at Wycombe, but I am confident in my ability and I've got a manager who believes in me." Commenting on the signing, Taylor said, "He is a very good young professional and very serious about his work, he's a powerful forward running midfield player with a very good left foot. Lewwis has a great hunger for the game and that's what I'm looking for. I want players to come in, to be hungry and prove a point. He fits the bill."
