Background: A former trainee with Dundee United who totalled close to 200 First Team appearances for the Scottish Premier side before tempting into England by then Wycombe Manager Paul Lambert. He made his debut for Dundee United in their 1-0 home defeat to Celtic on 2nd May 2000 and scored his first goal at the start of the following, also against Celtic at Tannadice, this time a 2-1 defeat. It was during the 2000/2001 season that McCracken made his Scottish Under 21 debut - and he went to make five appearances up until 2003. He was a regular in the United side until being told he could leave at the end of the 2006/7 season. On signing the central defender, Paul Lambert commented, "David has played over 200 games at the highest level and he's come up against strikers like Larsson, Sutton and Hartson. He's a top quality signing and one that I'm sure our fans will be delighted with. We've pulled off a real coup in signing him." Meanwhile, McCracken commented, "Paul Lambert is a massive name in Scottish football and I'm looking forward to having the chance to play under him. There were a few clubs in England and Scotland who were interested but the gaffer was that insistent in getting me down here to see the place that I really felt wanted. I know some people will ask why I am joining a club in League Two but when you look around the place and see the ground and the training ground you realise the stature and the ambition of the club."
