Background: Originally a trainee with Bristol City, he made his First Team debut for City on 27th September 1997, coming on as a last minute substitute during a 3-0 victory over Luton Town at Ashton Gate. He quickly established himself in the City side and enjoyed promotion to 'Division One' at the end of the 1997/98 campaign. The 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 season's were grim times for Doherty as he missed virtually all games due to injury. However, he returned again for the 2001/2002 campaign and went on to total more than 200 appearances for City and gain nine international caps for Northern Ireland, before moving to Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 2005. Never established himself at Rangers and began his first loan spell at Wycombe under Paul Lambert in September 2006. After a brief return to QPR in December 2006, he started a further loan spell at Wycombe and went on to be named in the PFA 'League 2' side of the season 2006/7. Due to sign for Wycombe on a permanent basis in the summer of 2007, he suffered an appendicitis while on holiday and the deal was delayed until October 2007, with the deal being made permanent in the January 2008 transfer window. On finally getting his man, Paul Lambert commented, "I'm sure that our fans will be absolutely delighted about this signing and so am I. Tommy is a top class player who has bags of experience and I've been trying to get him for ages. I know that he'll be worth the wait." Doherty himself, is renowned for keeping interviews to a minimum and just let his football do the talking.
Agreed a contract extension in July 2009 that now runs until June 2012.
