Gregory 2 Youth Alliance news for 2004/5 Changes were made to the Youth Alliance structure for the 2004/5 season. The introduction of the Modern Apprenticeship for Sporting Excellence (MASE) signalled a change from the old three-year scholarship to a two-year scheme. Instead of Under 19 and Under 17 competition a new Under 18 competition was introduced. Under 16 football is also played, but the Football League and FA class as schoolboy football, so no results are officially recorded or points awarded. In this first season of the lower age groups, clubs were allowed to field five over-age players (one goalkeeper plus four outfield players) but this will gradually be reduced to zero over the next three seasons. The over-age players are understood to be under 19's. The regional "Conference" phase is followed by a "Merit Division" phase. Clubs are split into their Merit Divisions on the basis of their placing at the end of the "Conference" phase. Wanderers play in the South East Conference. Merit Division fixtures began on 12th February 2005. Wanderers took on board eleven new First Year Apprentices for the 2004/5 season. The Second Year Apprentices for 2004/5 are Stephen Flower, Steve Gregory and Liam Grier. Matty Fox and Andy Reilly have signed First Year Pro contracts from the 2003/4 Second Years, while summer signings 2004 Sonny Ball, Russell Martin and Shahed Ahmed are all young enough to play in the U18 League as 'over-age' players. Andy Reilly has since left the Club by mutual consent while 16 year old Rashid Kamara has joined on trial and scored on his debut during the 6-3 League Cup victory at Oxford. Another 19 year old, Tamba Ngongou, also joined during the season, while First Year apprentice Shane Garricks opted to join the Youth set-up at QPR.
