The FA Youth Cup
Andy Savage - opened the scoring against Dover Wanderers' Under 18 side earned a trip to play Aston Villa after overcoming Dover Athletic 4-1 at Adams Park in the Second Round of the FA Youth Cup. Wanderers took a two goal lead within the first six minutes but the visitors held on and pulled a goal back with eleven minutes remaining. However, goals from James Faulkner and Kieron Gradwell in the dying moments sealed the passage to the Third Round tie that will take place on Wednesday 8th December at Villa Park with a 7pm kick-off and free admission.
Youth Team boss Gary Smith made one change to the line-up that had beaten Dulwich Hamlet in the previous round - Steven Gregory coming into central midfield in favour of Liam Grier. Wanderers got off to the best possible start when with less then three minutes on the clock Faulkner's powerful cross from the right bye-line was smashed home by Andy Savage at the far post. Three minutes later it was 2-0 after Gary Bunting's free-kick from the right of midfield eluded the Dover defence and creeped in at the far post.
Wanderers second goal flys past the Dover 'keeperWanderers continued to dominate the remainder of the half. Faulkner could have made it three on 10 minutes following an Ikechi Anya cross from the right and Anya also went close on two occasions before the break. First on 24 minutes he saw a shot from the right corner of the penalty area palmed away by the visitors 'keeper and nine minutes later almost caught the 'keeper out with a speculative cross/shot from more than 30 yards out on the right. Kieron Gradwell hit the bar with a header as the half drew to a close.
To the visitors credit, their heads never dropped with Wanderers unable to find the vital third goal to kill the tie off. Faulkner missed another couple of good chances in the final quarter of the game before Dover were given their lifeline. Ashley Burton had forced Stephen Flower to save in the 77th minute but two minutes later Carl Barron was given space down the right flank and nipped in to flick the ball home and delight the Dover bench and their followers at Adams Park.
However, thoughts of an equaliser faded with a minute left on the clock when Anya's cross from the right was controlled by Faulkner who then shot on the turn to restore Wycombe's two goal cushion. Then as stoppage time approached, Bunting's corner from the left was scooped home by Gradwell from close range as the Dover defence were left ball watching.
