Match report

Wycombe v Southampton
Sunday 16th November 2003

The 10-2 victory over basement side Southampton on Sunday 16th November was good to get out the way but it was not a satisfying game against a side who were only able to field ten players and were later reduced to eight players after picking up two red cards.

In the first League match of season played on The Rye the ball bobbled and bounced and all over the pitch players were struggling with their touch. Better control would have given both teams more chance to play. Nevertheless there were some good goals and a range of scorers. Sophy Bowden scored two of the first three, bringing her season’s total to five. Su Oakley scored three herself and laid on crosses for Bowden, Leah Asante and Jane Graddon. Having an extra player always gave Blues an advantage though we weren’t always able to pick out the extra player and often gave away possession needlessly. The visitors had travelled a long way and when a through ball was played in behind the defence they were determined to make it count. Lou Plumridge came, and then changed her mind and in that moment was beaten.

Marion Lyon should have done better, heading Caroline Yandell’s freekick wide of the far post early in the second half. Leah added two more either side of the visitors second – an excellent strike off of a short corner. That goal was marred by some suicidal verbal abuse of the referee which left him no option but to put names in the book, while a second yellow left Southampton with nine players. Oakley was through again before being brought down on the penalty spot, the challenge earned a red card, but the spot kick slid off the outside of the post to safety. With three changes for the last half an hour, Raff Valentino headed the final goal from a corner, to score on her debut and Blues make it up to 10 points from 8 games.
