Match report

Southampton v Wycombe
Sunday 31st August 2003

ActionThe first team got off to a great start in the Premier league, beating Southampton WFC 6-1. The Hampshire team were missing players to the Saints v Manchester United game at St Mary's, and will undoubtedly be stronger when they travel up here later in the season, but those three points could be extremely important.
On a big pitch with plenty of room to play Wycombe produced one of the best footballing performances of recent years. The first 45 minutes saw passing and movement all around the pitch and the creation of half a dozen clear goal-scoring opportunities. Su Oakley carried on where she left off last year, scoring a first half hat-trick and another two goals in the second half. Sophy Bowden, who replaced Jane Graddon midway through the second half made it six when she raced into the far post to push the cross from the left over the line.
With this year's larger and stronger squad, few players are guaranteed a start. Caroline Yandell and Esther Morley were picked at the back, with Jodie Taylor on the right and Jenny Kitley on the left a combination which worked well with Caz and Esther beginning to develop an understanding. Lou Plumridge in goal had a quieter game than she would have expected, but when called upon she responded well, particularly in the second half as the rest of the team tired and produced a great fingertips save to tip a freekick over the bar maintained the flattering scoreline.
ActionKaryn Atkinson, Debbie Richards and Marion Lyon played in the centre of midfield working hard to link with the wide and forward players. Work that's been done at training for almost a year was finally seen on the field in a competitive game and we can enjoy building on this performance as the season progresses.
