Match report

Wycombe v Slough
Sunday 21st September 2003

Wycombe went down to Slough 3-1 in the only game of the Berks & Bucks County Cup First Round. There were a few changes from the previous week’s squad. Claire Wakefield returned to the left of midfield & Eloise Revans started at right back with Jodie Taylor in front of her. After a disappointing performance the previous week we had lots to think about, but Slough soon showed they had no intention of giving us any thinking time at all. The ball ‘pinged’ from defence to defence without anyone really being able to bring the ball down and play. Half time arrived with the game goalless and no clear-cut chances at either end.
The second half saw a more effective performance from the Blues, but with a couple more goals than Slough probably deserved. The visitors took the lead from a corner that seemed to bounce out of the keeper’s hands after she’d claimed it and fell kindly for a straight forward header. Wycombe equalised after Wakefield played Su Oakley in and her shot was parried for Taylor to tuck in at the far post.
As the game opened up, mistakes allowed both teams to play a bit, with the visitors taking advantage first, before Blues came close at the other end. Debbie Richards worked hard all game in the centre and wasn’t far away from a goal. The Slough keeper reacted quickly to prevent Wakefield equalising as she pounced on a rebound and Caroline Yandell’s free-kick beat the keeper only to be cleared off the line. As Wycombe sought an equaliser there was more space at the back and the visitors knocked in a third right at the end, after Revans was taken to hospital with a broken forearm.
We have lots to learn in this league, and hopefully we can take a few things away from this game for when we meet again in the league on 12th October.
