Match report

Wycombe v Slough
Sunday 12th October 2003

After the previous week’s disappointment, we were looking to bounce back against a Slough side we knew we could compete with. But on the day we deserved nothing and that’s exactly what we got!

In the first couple of minutes we had three chances to score - player of the match Debbie Richards was very close to squeezing a shot past the keeper, then Jaz Brown was in the box waiting for Su Oakley to square the ball and Sophy Bowden’s shot from the edge of the area injured the keeper’s hand – but weren’t able to take any of them and suffered as a result for the rest of the game.

Slough started with 10 players, then had to take their injured keeper off and hand their centre forward the gloves before their missing player found the ground 20 minutes after kick off. The longer the game went goalless, the more their confidence grew, while we swung from taking too long on the ball, to kicking it without looking.

No score at half time and we knew that three points was really the only way to rescue a poor performance, but passing moves and real attempts on goal were few and far between. Leah Asante was involved in a number of promising moves and really should have finished off one chance she had arriving at the far post. There were few shots on target, that weren’t in reality passes to the stand-in goalkeeper and didn’t look like scoring.

We didn’t deserve to take anything from the game and that was confirmed when a needless corner was given away and shot that should have been picked up with ease trickled over the line. The visitors made sure of the victory tapping in a rebound after the original shot in the last couple of minutes came back off the crossbar. These are the games we all know we need to win to reach our points target by the end of the season; there will be harder ones to come.

Final Score Wycombe 0 Slough 2

Squad: Louise Plumridge, Nic Thorne, Jenny Kitley, Esther Morley, Marion Lyon, Debbie Richards, Jane Graddon, Leah Asante, Sophy Bowden, Jaz Brown, Su Oakley, Jodie Taylor
