Match report

Slough Town v Wycombe Wanderers - League
Sunday 18th April 2004

After going behind to an early goal, Wycombe came back to beat Slough Town 5-1 and guarantee premier division survival.

The last win was a long time back and we were desperate to take points today; Slough lay one point above us in the table, having played the same number of games, but we had lost the previous two encounters. The game was played in almost constant pouring rain and as the ball skidded across the pitch, the home side, with only ten players, knicked the ball, knocked it into space behind the defence, shot and scored from the rebound. Their eleventh player arrived, and Blues scored three goals in 5 minutes! Player of the Match Leah Asante floated a chip over the keeper as she cut in from the left. Su Oakley took the free kick after she was brought down just outside the area and squeezed her shot past the wall, into the bottom left corner of the goal. Left back Jenny Kitley then started a passing move involving four players that finished with Oakley’s second strike in as many minutes.

Jodie Taylor came into the centre of midfield with Debbie Richard, and played her best 90 minutes of the season. Tina Nutt and Leah Asante caused Slough problems on the flanks and playing two up front created chances throughout the game. In a much improved performance the team worked better for each other, playing passes early when it mattered and picking up interceptions at the back.

Lou Plumridge played most of the game at the edge of the penalty box and stood up well to make a couple of important saves early in the second half. The both sides missed a clear chance and the 3-1 scoreline stood for most of the game. The Slough keeper made a great save from Asante’s strike, before some neat passing opened up chances for Oakley to take her season’s league & cup tally to 33. A cross from Nutt almost at the corner flag made the fourth while Oakley made the fifth herself after cutting back inside to make the shooting angle.
