Match report

Reading Royals v Wycombe Wanderers - League
Sunday 4th April 2004

It would have been nice to have something new to say, but although Reading Royals Reserves top the league and are about 30 points ahead of Wycombe, we still gave them 2 of their 3 goals in an average game, in which neither side impressed.
Caz Yandell and Esther Morley marshalled the defence to play a high line and earned a series of freekicks as Reading forwards wandered offside. Blues best chance of the first half came from a driven free-kick, flicked on by Su Oakley for Raff Valentino to shoot and in the second half Oakley’s glancing header from an in-swinging corner, but both went wide. Player of the Match Leah Asante worked tirelessly up and down the left and almost scored herself when she was switched to centre forward for most of the second half.
Lou Plumridge was back in goal this week and did well to save the blushes of stand –in right back Marion Lyon after her clearance clipped the heels of the right half to cannon straight back into the goal mouth. Debbie Richards and Sophy Bowden worked hard to cover a lot of ground in the centre, but it was difficult for Blues to really get hold of the ball to be able to play. It was a shame then that it was an under-hit pass that let the Royals in to score their first goal which bounced awkwardly and spun over Plumridge’s shoulder when she seemed to have it covered.
The wind picked up in the second half and the ball hung in the air spending most of the game on the left. Oakley dropped back into midfield and gave us more of the ball, and although Asante had a few good balls to work off we still weren’t able to play the kind of football that we want to take into matches.
Jenny Kitley and Debbie Richards played some neat one-twos which gave us a chance to pick out our passes, but it was another misplaced pass across the back that allowed them in to double their lead. Morley and Lyon made a couple of important tackles when Reading did break through, but playing a high line is always a risk and a close call was given the benefit of the doubt and we were too slow in the chase back, to make it 3-0.
With three games remaining we really need 3 points to be sure of avoiding relegation. We knew the first season in this division would be tough, other teams are technically better but we have given away too many goals unnecessarily and have 3 weeks to try and put that right.
Final Score Reading 3 Wycombe 0

Squad: Lou Plumridge, Jenny Kitley, Eloise Revans, Caroline Yandell, Esther Morley, Raff Valentino, Su Oakley, Leah Asante, Sophy Bowden, Tina Nutt, Jane Graddon, Jodie Taylor, Marion Lyon
