Reserve Team match report

AFC Newbury v Wycombe Wanderers - League Cup
Sunday 18th January 2004

The Ladies Reserve side won their Berks & Bucks Women’s County League Cup Quarter Final tie against AFC Newbury 2-0, setting up a semi-final away at Morris Motors. The victory proved one of the teams best performances of the season and manager Tracy Sturges was delighted with the way the players approached the game.
There were early chances at both ends, with Stephanie 'Twinkle' Dean hitting the post on 18 minutes, Becca Hilton’s seeing a shot tipped over for a corner four minutes later and Tracy Sturges saving at the other end in between. Meanwhile good defensive work by Roisin Nellis, Tracy Jani, Tahli Jenkinson and Laura McLean contained the home side as much as possible.
Loretta 'Freddie' Semmons-Doel and 'Twinkle' were both denied shooting opportunities by very tight offside decisions while corners at both ends created chances but the shots were either wide or safely gathered by the respective keepers. It was a 'Twinkle' penalty, awarded for a handball, that eventually broke the deadlock, giving Blues the lead just before half-time.
The second half continued in much the same vain, with chances and saves at both ends. Captain Amy Watters had a couple of chances to score and Hilton made a series of strong runs but couldn’t finish. Karen Slater came on for 'Freddie' and with just under 15 minutes remaining 'Slats' went close to getting on the scoresheet before 'Twinkle' scored her second to give Wycombe a two goal cushion as Newbury continued to push forward.
Sturges blocked a goal bound shot on 86 minutes and McLean cleared the rebound off the line to maintain a clean sheet in spite of constant Newbury pressure. The home side named keeper/coach Tracy Sturges as player of the match, while Wanderers nominated Becca Hilton. This was an excellent team performance, with good individual work all round the pitch.
