Action The First Team went out of the Women's FA Cup at the second hurdle, losing 3-2 to Luton Town Belles at Wanderers home ground.
Wanderers' goalkeeper Louise Plumridge and the woodwork combined to keep us in the game in the first half as the visitors created a series of chances that they were unable to convert. Luton used the time and space well to move the ball around, but it was Blues who took the lead after 10 minutes when Karyn Atkinson stabbed the ball home from close range, from Su Oakley's cross from the left. We began the half well and Nic Thorne's run down the right gave us a half chance within a minute of kick off, but as time went on some of that initial drive seemed to seep away. Luton's efforts were rewarded on 18 minutes when they converted a controversial free-kick on the edge of the area, firing across the face of the goal behind the defence. On 29 minutes they made it two as a moment's hesitation at the back was exploited and the chance well taken.
In the second half we pushed up further to put more pressure on the ball and in many ways succeeded. There was more football from Wycombe in this game than the last two combined. When it works it looks good, the game becomes predictable and we give ourselves the chance to score. When it breaks down we're in trouble and it was a couple of mistakes that led to the The Belles' third goal on 68 minutes. Plumridge made another two good saves tipping a stinging shot over the bar and using her legs to block as the visitors broke through to leave their forward one-on-one.
Debbie Richards had her best game since joining the club during the summer. She worked hard to win the ball and distribute it well. Overall though we struggled to get the ball in behind their defence, which limited our goal scoring chances. Jane Graddon played the second half on the right and hit the bar with a cracking shot which on a better would have hit the target. Oakley was brought down a couple of times right on the edge of the area; Jaz Brown converted the first on 71 minutes with a powerful shot straight past the wall but we couldn't recreate Luton's freekick from almost exactly the same spot wide on the right to get back on terms as the tie ended with a 3-2 victory for Luton who now go on to the First Round proper, while Wanderers can now 'concentrate' on the league.
