Launton v Wycombe Sunday 23rd November 2003 Blues visited third placed Launton, on what must have been the wettest Sunday of the year and deserved to take something from the game. A first half equaliser scored by Su Oakley kept Wycombe on equal terms for 65 minutes, but it was the home team who scored the second goal and as we pushed forward gaps were exploited at the back and the game ended 4-1. But it could all have been so very different! Oakley hit the post after just 5 minutes, the rebound was cleared long and 20 seconds later the ball was in the back of our net. Sophy Bowden also hit the post while Caz Yandell’s saw her penalty saved. Then after Lou Plumridge stood up well to save from point blank range, Jane Graddon cut the ball back neatly to set up Bowden to finish confidently, only to have the goal disallowed for a dubious offside decision. The back four of Yandell, Esther Morley, Jenny Kitley and Nic Thorne worked well together compressing the play and making things hard for players used to plenty of room. Plumridge made a series of important saves in the second half, coming off her line quickly and standing up well when she needed to. It was a day for hard work all around the pitch and Debbie Richards and Marion Lyon did all they could in the centre of the park, but couldn’t dominate in the air and it was a goal kick headed back over the defence that set up Launton’s second. Raff Valentino and Karyn Atkinson came on for the final quarter of an hour, the latter’s first game back after injury. Atkinson, Bowden and Leah Asante went close but as the pitch got wetter the ball seemed to run just that bit too far for us and no-one was able to make any of the half chances count. At the other end when the home side caught us on the break, they judged their passes well and placed their shots to add two goals in the last 10 minutes. All in all, we worked hard, created chances, had a good goal disallowed and found a 4-1 defeat difficult to accept.
