The above photo shows Glesni Bradford from the High Wycombe branch of the Nationwide presenting WWFC with a cheque for £10,417 at the Aston Villa match on 23rd September 2003. This marketing grant was handed across at the same time as presenting Wycombe Wanderers Ladies Reserve Team with a set of "Nationwide" training bibs and sweatshirts to go with the shirts presented the previous season. Wanderers Director of Sales and Marketing Mark Austin explained the presentation by commenting "For the last few seasons, the Football League sponsors, Nationwide, have very generously set aside a marketing grant that every one of the 72 members clubs can apply for. Each year club must meet strict criteria in order to have their application accepted and then only receive the full grant once the actual scheme promised has been delivered."
Mr Austin added "I'm delighted that, to date, Wycombe Wanderers have always managed to qualify for the full grant. Last season, the Club worked with Marion Lyon, the Secretary of Wycombe Wanderers Ladies F.C. to fulfil the criteria set by Nationwide and the Football League of 1) Increasing the number of female supporters at Nationwide Football League matches, 2) Driving awareness of the women's game and 3) Increasing participation in women's football."
The scheme was such a success, the same criteria applied to the 2003/2004 season and thanks to the help and assistance given by Marion Lyon and Wycombe Wanderers Ladies Football Club, WWFC's application was approved by the Football League, resulting in the cheque presentation on 23rd September.
In addition and as part of the Nationwide Supporters Player of Tomorrow Scheme for 2003/2004, kindly sponsored by the Nationwide, WWFC have already ordered a new strip for the Wycombe Wanderers Ladies F.C. for their First Team, which the Club will pay for out of the grant monies. The "Nationwide" logo will appear on front of the Wycombe Wanderers Ladies home shirts. This will mean both Wycombe Wanderers Ladies reserve team kit (bought last year by WWFC as part of the 2002/2003 Nationwide Supporters of Tomorrow Scheme) and First Team will then have "NATIONWIDE" sponsored kits.
As part of the 2003/2004 scheme, Wycombe Wanderers are also holding several "Ladies Days" at Nationwide Football League matches before the end of 2003, featuring an invitation to all women's football teams in the area who apply, to come to a WWFC Nationwide Football League Division II home match as the Club's guests.
Other initiatives as part of the Nationwide Supporters Player of Tomorrow Scheme has seen the Club permit the Ladies to play both their Women's FA Cup Qualifying Round matches at Wanderers home stadium, continue to offer editorial space in the match day programme and provided up to 600 "complimentary" seat tickets for sale by Wycombe Wanderers Ladies with ALL the proceeds from the sale of these tickets put towards pitch hire, equipment costs, FA coaching, promotion of women's football locally, etc.
Anybody interested in getting involved with or sponsoring any aspect of the Ladies "senior" or younger teams should contact Marion Lyon on 01494 437477 or e-mail her at maz@wwlfc.co.uk.
