Match report

Haywood United v Wycombe
Sunday 2nd November 2003

After some disappointing results recently, a 4-4 away draw against a strong Haywood United team showed that we were indeed capable of better.
Blues coach Graham Malcolm picked the tactics for each half and expecting a battle, the whole team applied themselves to the game plan. There was more commitment and belief all around the pitch and we looked like a team who wanted to play as a team. Three different scorers in the one game was another bonus and it was a good opportunity to put previous frustrations behind us. Good communication across the back four forced the Aylesbury team have to work hard to stay on side and in the end it was a midfielder who missed the call that enabled Haywood to break through and equalise. Lou Plumridge stood her ground well to save from a one-on-one situation, before the home side worked another good opportunity to take the lead. Jenny Kitley was unlucky to head the wrong side of the post from a corner but just before the break Sophy Bowden was rewarded for her good work off Oakley, with a goal from an acute angle, across the face and just inside the far post.
Playing into the wind in the second half, the defence dropped back, Leah Asante played up front and Oakley joined Debbie Richards and Marion Lyon in the centre. Haywood probably had more of the play, but on the break Oakley laid the ball to Bowden wide on the left who drove into the box and shot with her left giving the keeper no chance. An equaliser was always possible though and as we stood still and the offside flag wasn’t raised 15 minutes from time, 4-4 was probably a fair result.
