Match report

Wycombe v Haywood United - Chairman's Cup
Sunday 28th March 2004

Blues’ luck finally ran out in the second period of extra time, when Haywood scored their fourth to win the Chairman’s Cup First Round tie 4-3.
Tina Nutt almost put Wycombe ahead with a volley just over the bar in the first minute and it didn’t get any better than that for a long, long time. Stand-in keeper Paula Benson made some important stops and 'Freddie', Esther Morley and Caz Yandell all cleared off the line at some point during the game. It was a mistake in the midfield when Maz Lyon failed to clear that allowed the Aylesbury team in for their first goal and that set the pattern for the rest of the game. In spite of all the good defensive work it was mistakes that led to goals.
At the other end the opposition were not being so generous and chances were few and far between. Su Oakley’s run into the box invited a challenge and one of the three players around her was bound to trip her. The keeper didn’t really have a chance with Oakley's penalty and suddenly Wycombe were back in the game. Blues stepped up a gear and began to equal the visitors before a poor back pass let Haywood take the lead again.
Wanderers levelled when Oakley scored her second with a beautifully floated shot from outside the area into the top far corner. The goal saw Wycombe begin passing and starting to look like a team that thought they could play. Leah Asante and Player of the Match Tina Nutt on the wings pushed the ball past the full backs and looked dangerous.
Extra time saw another mistake and another Haywood goal, as a ball between keeper and sweeper was cleared by neither. Blues looked the better team now, but were behind again. A couple of Caz Yandell free kicks and corners from Oakley and Valentino were dangerous but no-one could get the final touch. Jodie Taylor and Raff Valentino did well when they came on and Wycombe were playing some good football. Oakley knicked a touch on a back pass, turned the player and dug out a cross that Asante finished to bring us level again at 3-3 with 5 minutes of extra time remaining. Then at the death, from a game we were lucky to still be in, a fourth mistake cost us a game we had worked hard to get back into three times.
Final Score Wycombe 3 Haywood 4 (after extra time)

Squad: Paula Benson, Jenny Kitley, ‘Freddie’ Semmons-Doel, Caroline Yandell, Esther Morley, Marion Lyon, Su Oakley, Leah Asante, Sophy Bowden, Tina Nutt, Jane Graddon, Jodie Taylor, Raff Valentino, Eloise Revans
