Match report

Wycombe v Haywood United
Sunday 15th February 2004

Su Oakley scores the winner against HaywoodThe first victory since November followed an indifferent performance by the Ladies First Team in this League meeting with Haywood United. The team have played better and come away with nothing, so when Su Oakley broke the deadlock with 15 minutes to go, we were determined not to throw the lead away.
Lou Plumridge looked confident in goal and came out of her area early to clear up the loose balls. Player of the match, Caz Yandell kept the back four well organised and gained a number of free kicks, which we were unable to make the best of. An early corner from the right was swung in well and Jenny Kitley came through well, heading just wide of the far post. Blues had quite a lot of early possession but weren't able to create any clear cut chances. Raff Valentino took a couple of free kicks from wide on the right, but no-one could get a solid contact. Oakley had one or two shots from distance but in the end nothing to cause the 'keeper any real concern.
Caroline YandellHaywood tackled hard, won the majority of balls in the air but failed to capitalise on the possession they won. Wycombe's handful of promising openings all came from one touch play, while anyone who wanted more usually lost out. Leah Asante and Sophy Bowden worked up and down on the flanks, but we struggled to link passes together making for a scrappy game. Valentino and Bowden combined to put Oakley through, she beat the defender and the keeper before an offside flag was noticed. Bowden played in a couple of curling corners from the left, Oakley found the second heading just wide of the near post. Within minutes Valentino and Richards put her through again and Oakley's finish was clinical. Tina Nutt made her debut coming on for the injured Elo Revans, Marion Lyon dropped in at right back and Bowden into the centre. The last 10 minutes saw determined hard work all round the pitch and the final whistle eventually confirmed three points that had been a long time coming.
