Haywood United v Wycombe- League Cup Sunday 29th February 2004 This three times postponed preliminary round tie of the Women’s Southern Region League Cup finished 3-1 to Haywood after a disappointing second half performance from Wycombe. The team gave away two unnecessary goals having failed to clear the ball with conviction and found it come straight back behind our back four. The first goal was cancelled out by a Su Oakley penalty after a good move down the left ended when Oakley was brought down as she carried the ball into the area. Having dropped four points from our two league games the Aylesbury team were determined not to give anything away, and although we were prepared for a physical battle this time, we looked far from convincing. We struggled to take a good touch and were immediately under pressure. Debbie Richards found a couple of good through balls in the first half, but we struggled to create real chances from either flank. Leah Asante’s endeavour down the right was rewarded with a player of the match award, but as a team we struggled to find a way through. ‘Freddie’ Semmons Doel stepped in at right back to cover our two injured defenders, and put in an excellent performance, working hard to rectify any mistakes and getting some important touches back to Lou Plumridge in goal. Plumridge stood up well to block a couple of one-on-ones. But save of the day, without a doubt goes to Haywood’s keeper who tipped Sophy Bowden’s header around the post, denying her a contender for goal of the season. Tina Nutt, Asante, Richards and Oakley all got on the ends of balls across the box, but were blocked by a keeper who was quick off her line and brave at the feet of incoming players. As the second half progressed, Haywood grew stronger, winning almost every battle around the pitch and their third goal marked their dominance. In the end the better team won; we need to find a little bit more for the rest of our league games, if we are to gain the target 3 or 4 points.
