Action In an exciting match Blues went ahead against the run of play, let the advantage slip and then scored two second half goals to beat Clapton Orient 4-2 on Sunday to progress in the Women’s FA Cup. The second qualifying round, also to be played at home will see a re-run of this summer’s play-off match against Luton Town Belles on Sunday 28th September.
Despite everything said in the dressing room, we started poorly and struggled to contain a team that passed and moved like they wanted to win the game. On the big pitch there were times throughout the first half when we were so slow to close the ball down that the Londoners must have expected a comfortable victory. Lou Plumridge was alert on the edge of her box and cleared up a number of dangerous through balls. The woodwork seemed to be on our side too when Plumridge was beaten with an early shot, the rebound fell kindly for Wycombe to clear.
With no respect for the balance of play Su Oakley took the first chance she created to put Wanderers ahead and good work from Debbie Richards and Karyn Atkinson set up Claire Wakefield to double the lead. Clapton dug deep, knowing that there were plenty of cracks in the team that was two goals ahead, and before the break they had pulled back onto level terms. Both goals came after Blues had squandered possession and typified most of the first half performance.
Changes during the break gave Oakley more support as Jas Brown came on to play between her and the midfield and Sophy Bowden was introduced on the right. As a team we began to close the ball when we lost possession, and move into space looking for a pass when we won it. Passing moves crept into the game and Blues began to look more like a team. There were chances at both ends, with the woodwork playing a solid game for both defences, before Oakley made it 3-2 from Bowden’s confident run down the right.
Clapton’s Karen Clark kept Blues’ defence on their toes and a good performance from sweeper Esther Morley helped maintain a clean sheet in the second half. Plumridge pushed a shot round the post at full stretch when it looked like she was beaten and reacted well to the resulting corner. When Blues had possession there were some nice moments of individual skill from Brown and Oakley, providing shots for Richards, Bowden and Leah Asante who came on for Perkins. But it was Oakley who scored again to make it 4-2 with a strong run through the centre setting up a one-on-one with the keeper.
