Match report

Wycombe v Caversham
Sunday 25th January 2004

After a few weeks off without a game the First XI lost 4-2 at home to Caversham on Sunday 25th January in game where the team did not play poorly overall, but gave away soft goals and failed to capitalise on the many chances created at the other end.

Wycombe played some good football at times, creating chances throughout the game, but seemed to lack confidence in front of goal. In the first half five shots from four players landed harmlessly in the keeper's arms without her really needing to make a save. Three half chances at the other end finished up in the back of the net. It was frustrating to watch, and to play. One minute players gave everything to win a ball and the next we seemed to hesitate just long enough to allow the opposition to pick out their pass and we lost another goal.

Going forward, it was the same story, good play somewhere on the pitch set up a series of one-on-ones with the goal keeper, or a cross or a corner, but the good work is then not followed up with a goal-threatening shot.

Caversham were a competent team, who, after a poor start to the season have made excellent progress, but responsibility for this result lies firmly in the Wycombe camp. Su Oakley scored twice in the second half. We conceded another a fourth goal in slow motion, moments after a tremendous effort by Elo Revans to clear off the line. The last few minutes of the game saw Wycombe create enough to level the game, but both chances went over the bar and we had to accept no reward for all the effort that had gone before.
