Match report

Wycombe Wanderers v Carterton
Sunday 14th March 2004

The Ladies First Team had a golden opportunity to take something from this home League meeting with Carterton who could only field 10 players. However, after gifting a goal at the beginning of each half, Wanderers were unable to make the advantage count and lost 3-2.
The team had a clear game plan, and for 85 minutes played to it, but those other few minutes were costly. Su Oakley put us ahead within 10 minutes, a clinical finish after some quick one touch play, but the visitors were back on level terms almost immediately as hesitation on the edge of the box allowed Carterton’s top scorer to stroll through and roll the ball into the back of the net.
For the rest of the half Blues tried to find a second. Oakley’s pull back into Sophy Bowden’s path looked perfect, but the keeper was out quickly and blocked the shot. Leah Asante went close too, while at the other end they were limited to only one real chance which hit the bar.
A lack of concentration on 46 minutes cost us when a back pass from the half way line went off for a corner. The resulting corner was headed across the face of goal, 'Freddie' blocked it on the line, Wanderers' keeper Louise Plumridge wasn’t able to grab the loose ball and the visitors were ahead. Quarter of an hour later the Oxfordshire team were flying when a Carterton midfielder beat offside trap and finished well to make it three. Backs against the wall, Wycombe seemed to step up and play at the pace we should have used for the whole game. Jodie Taylor picked up a couple of goal kicks, Debbie Richards and Marion Lyon tried to stop them playing through the centre and Bowden had her inspired spell, moving the ball faster and allowing the whole team to move up the field. Richards and Oakley combined, laid the ball wide to Bowden and her diagonal ball was knocked in at the far post by Asante. At 3-2 we still had a chance to take something from the game and substitute Steph Dean almost scored from a corner with her first touch. A series of corners in the final 10 minutes gave the potential of an equaliser, but the finishing touch was missing. Dean again came close with the last kick of the game, but what should have been shared points became another game in which we should have done better.
