Match report

Burghfield v Wycombe
Sunday 14th September 2003

Wanderers added another three points to their league total with a 4-2 win over Burghfield and Su Oakley brought her season's total to 12 goals in 3 games.
A long goal kick, on a shorter pitch than we've been used to, allowed Blues to take an early lead as Oakley took the bouncing ball in her stride and stroked it over the advancing keeper. Moments earlier Burfield hit the post in a similar move and it was clear that a couple of mistakes could cost us the game. Jas Brown set up a neat interchange between Oakley and Karyn Atkinson that looked too good to be true for number two, as Oakley side-footed the reverse ball back past the stranded keeper.
However, it was moments of individual skill that won us the game but left the team dissatisfied with what was a poor performance overall. The midfield struggled to get into the game, leaving the rest of the team isolated. Lou Plumridge looked comfortable in goal, Jenny Kitley managed Burghfield's player of the match pretty well and Caroline Yandell probably had her best all-round game for the club so far, but in front of them we were very patchy.
Oakley made it three by half-time, before the home side pulled one back almost on the whistle after a couple of missing challenges allowed their forward to place her shot. The second half saw no real improvement, with only occasional glimpses of the football we played in Southampton a fortnight ago. Substitutions on the right saw the introduction of Sophy Bowden & Eloise Revans which added pace and decision down the right that opened up a few more chances to play. But Burghfield's persistence was rewarded midway through the second half with a good goal that brought them within touching distance of a draw, before Oakley secured the points with a lob over the keeper from the edge of the box. There were a couple more chances at both ends, but for a poor performance, three points was definitely a result.
