Match report

Wycombe v Bracknell
Sunday 26th October 2003

From 2-0 down we got back on level terms, only to lose 3-2 at home to Bracknell in this League encounter. The visitors were the better team, but we made more chances and feel we should have taken something from the game.

We struggled to get into the game and although Bracknell ran the first 25 minutes, Esther Morley played a perfect ball behind their defence for Su Oakley to threw a dummy and turn, only to push her shot wide. The visitors made their technical skill count moments later with some neat passing and a strong run that always looked like it would end in a goal. Player of the match Debbie Richards met Oakley’s corner with a powerful header that went just wide post of the near post and Leah Asante went close as she met the keeper one-on-one. As we spurned chances the visitors made their's count as they broke and laid the ball across the box for the right midfield to finish. But the game was not over yet and for some reason Blues picked up their game all around the pitch and were rewarded as both Oakley and Asante battled to make the best of every ball that came forward and scored a goal each before half time.

Both teams played high up the pitch and almost any forward that stood still was left in an offside position. Amy Watters – Reserves captain – came in to cover injuries and illness and worked hard to protect our back three. Claire Wakefield and Sophy Bowden played in some good crosses during the second half but we struggled to get on the end of them and shoot with any belief. Maz Lyon and Asante were part of a goal mouth scramble that seemed to involve half the Bracknell side, Oakley drove a shot across the face of the goal, Louisa Suff in her first start for the club put in a couple of good corners but there was little to really trouble the visitor’s keeper. Morley and Caroline Yandell put in some important blocks but when the Berkshire team beat the offside track they always looked dangerous and a goal looked more than likely somewhere along the line. Lou Plumridge kept her eye on the ball and gathered long balls and crosses confidently; it was a jinking run from the right that set up a one-on-one that gave Bracknell the chance for their second league winner of the season and they weren’t about to give it away.
Final Score Wycombe 2 Bracknell 3
