Match report

Wycombe v Aylesbury
Sunday 5th October 2003

The Ladies first team lost out to a lucky but great goal, going down 2-1 to Aylesbury United. The winning goal came ten minutes from time when, with the ball well outside the area, two side ways flicks over her head and a perfect swing from the visitors’ centre forward sent the ball flying into the top left hand corner, when on another day the ball could have gone off for a throw.

It was a very disappointing result, as the team had worked hard, had most of the play in the first half, created chances, had two shots cleared off the line and matched the visitors throughout the second half. Debbie Richards had a great game in the centre of midfield and Leah Asante playing on the left, ran her a close second for player of the match.

When Su Oakley’s 5th minute header was saved, there was a worry that this might not be our day. A series of well-delivered corners produced chances that should have given us the lead. Jenny Kitley’s farpost header was cleared off the line, Jane Gradden’s low drive went wide of the upright and Aylesbury defended for all they were worth. Some productive passing moves through the midfield gave chances for Oakley, Asante and Jaz Brown but an excellent tackle and some brave goalkeeping prevented the ball crossing the line. To then go behind to a soft goal as the result of a mistimed backpass was heavy blow just before half time.

It was only fitting that our equaliser followed a slip by an Aylesbury defender that allowed Oakley an extra touch before burying her shot. Although a draw would have been a fair result both sides were looking for a winner and the game was stretched as Blues pushed forward and the visitors sent long clearances to their centre forwards, which we didn’t deal with as comfortably as we should have done. September Player of the Month, goalkeeper Louise Plumridge raced off her line to clear a rolling ball sent between the centre halves and could have done nothing about the shot that finally gave Aylesbury the victory.
