Match report

Aylesbury United v Wycombe
Sunday 4th January 2004

The deadly Wycombe disease struck again as 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go, it became 2-1 down by the 92nd minute and the Blues missed out on points again.

A second half injury to centre half Esther Morley seemed to be the turning point today as she was taken with quarter of an hour remaining. Marion Lyon moved back into defence and the shape began to be lost, in the end it was two individual mistakes in the last few minutes allowed second placed Aylesbury United to come back from a goal down and take all three points.

In a very even game both teams played some good football and there were chances at both ends. Wycombe won a series of corners and scored directly from a perfect delivery from player of the match Su Oakley and that was the only goal for most of the game. Leah Asante almost tucked the ball in at the far post but arrived just too early and Jenny Kitley went close from another corner. Jane Graddon hit the keeper from a yard out and no matter how many crosses were put in, we just could not make them count.

At the other end Caz Yandell kept the back four together and forced the home side to play in a compressed midfield. When they did find a way through Lou Plumridge in the Wycombe goal stood up well, made a couple of good saves and forced shots wide or onto the post. Karyn Atkinson, Claire Wakefield and Raff Valentino all did well when they came on, but although we had a lot of play we continued to shoot at the keeper and left ourselves open at the back. One player behind the line and one missed header proved crucial and when the chances were presented, Aylesbury’s forwards took them well, scoring on 88 and 92 minutes to take all three points.
