WANDERERS YOUTH TEAM ROUND-UP - Oct-Dec 2001 The Football League Youth Alliance
Gary Goodchild - picture Paul Lewis The main talking point during the second quarter of the 2001/2 campaign was the shock resignation of Youth Team boss Gary Goodchild. The news was revealed in October when Goodchild regretably announced he would be returnin to his adopted home country of Norway due to family reasons. Click here for full story
On the football side October saw the start of Wanderers 2001/2 FA Youth Cup campaign with a trip to Canvey Island. The orginal tie was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch but the re-scheduled game, on the same night the First Team were playing at Brighton in the LDV Vans Trophy, saw Wanderers triumph 5-2. Just a week later the Second Round saw Cirencester Town beaten 3-0 at Adams Park and the run continued with a highly impressive 3-1 victory at Sheffield United to set up a home tie with Norwich City in the Fourth Round.
Bramall Lane victory - highlight of the second quarterThe game at Bramall Lane turned out to be Goodchild's last game in charge at Wycombe. On his departure Goodchild commented "In my three and a half years at the club it has been my pleasure to work with such a good bunch of young players we've had in that time. I take great satisfaction from having helped the development of the seven who've progressed to the ranks in the club; Roger Johnson, Martyn Lee, Mark Osborn, Leeyon Phelan, Danny Senda, Ian Simpemba and Ben Townsend. With continued encouragement all could play a big part in the future of Wycombe Wanderers." Goodchild also believes the seeds have been sown for his current squad to make their mark, adding "The present youth squad has a number of players with the potential to make the grade".

Jack SmillieThat squad had a mixed bag of results during October and November. The Under 19's went from the high of beating the highly rated Leyton Orient side with a goal from Jack Smillie to the low of being thrashed 6-2 at Portsmouth, trailing 5-0 at half-time before adding a little respectabilty after the break.
Due to poor weather, the Under 17's only played five League games during the three month period from October to December but after a shaky start to the season were in more consistent form. They won on the road at Leyton Orient and Portsmouth and will be looking to complete the season in similar fashion as many of the squad look to impress enough to gain a scholarship.

We'll have news of the scholarships as soon as they are officially announced. Also look out for our regular news and results rounds-up on the chairboys.co.uk latest news page.
