YOUTH TEAM BOSS QUITS (Friday 26th October 2001) Wanderers' Youth Team boss Gary Goodchild has quit the Club to return to his adopted homeland of Norway. Goodchild, who is married to a Norwegian, will return around Christmas time after announcing the shock news to First Team boss Lawrie Sanchez. The Goodchild family moved back to Norway last October due to other family business commitments and the travelling back and forth has now become too difficult. He told the BFP "It's sad for me to be leaving but I've got to put my family first" Goodchild took over the Youth Team role in the summer of 1998 following Neil Smillie's promotion from Youth Team to First Team role at Adams Park. Under Goodchild's guidance the Youth Team has flourished and reached the Fourth Round of the FA Youth Cup during the 1999/2000 season before a last minute defeat at Newcastle United. At the end of the same season his side won the Division One South Merit Division. During his playing career Goodchild was an England Schoolboy International before taking up an apprenticeship at Arsenal. The majority of his career was spent in Norway playing in the Norwegian League for the likes of Viking Stavanger. After he stopped playing he moved into coaching in Norway working with many of the top Norwegian Internationals, including a successful spell at Byrne. At Wycombe he has seen several of his young players come through the ranks, the most recent being Ben Townsend, Roger Johnson and Leeyon Phelan. It's thought that Reserve Team boss Michael Forsyth could be in line to take over but this may only be on a temporary basis. Click here to read all the latest Wycombe news |
