AXA FA Cup WYCOMBE v
Wigan Athletic
Saturday 20th November
FA Cup Second Round
Keith Ryan - center forward for the day and grabbed the late equaliser to set up another Cup replay for Wycombe Wycombe grabbed a replay against Division Two leaders Wigan Athletic on Saturday after Keith Ryan picked up the pieces from a 90th minute Sean Devine effort. It was no less than Wycombe deserved after Devine had put Wycombe ahead in the 20th minute. After surviving an opening five minute spell of Wigan pressure, Wycombe went on to dominate the first half and it was only a lucky deflected shot from Simon Haworth that put The Latics level on the stroke of half-time. The visitors showed their class in the second-half, however, and after Roberto Martinez had struck the post, Haworth was there again to crash the ball home on 61 minutes. Wycombe threw caution to the wind in the closing stages and the gamble paid off when McSporran sprinted down the right and when Devine's shot cannoned off the upright, Ryan swept the ball home to spark the celebrations at The Valley End.
On a bitterly cold afternoon Lawrie Sanchez stuck with the same eleven that overcame Oxford City the previous Tuesday - Jason Cousins having to be content with a place on the bench. However, in a brave move, Keith Ryan was thrown in as a center-forward to provide extra options for Devine and McSporran. In midfield Dave Carroll and Steve Brown impressed again. 'Brownie' saw a dipping volley go close after an 11th minute move down the left. Moments later Carroll pulled centered the ball for Devine but his right footed effort was blocked. Wycombe completed a purple patch when Jamie Bates saw a pile-driver saved with ease by Stillie in the Wigan goal.
Wigan responded when Haworth saw a low shot saved by the legs of Taylor on 18 minutes but it was Wycombe who took the lead two minutes later. McSporran controlled the ball beautifully down the Wycombe right before delivering to Devine in the center, who kept in front of his defender to fire the ball in. Wycombe nearly went further ahead just after the half-hour mark when Mark Rogers saw a header deflected wide following a Carroll corner from the right. Haworth scuffed a shot on 38 minutes and it looked like Wycombe would go into the break ahead before Haworth's lucky strike after Rogers clearance fell in his path.
Half-time 1-1
Haworth's second goal of the game on 61 minutes put Wigan firmly in the driving seat and finally brought to life their small band of supporters. Wycombe began to struggle to create openings. Keith Ryan flashed the ball across the face of the goal on 64 minutes but the vital goal eluded The Wanderers. Paul Emblen replaced Matt Lawrence with eight minutes left as Wycombe went to three at the back in an effort to save the game. Wigan had a glorious chance to seal the game on 87 minutes but Rogers did enough to put off top scorer Stuart Barlow before Martin Taylor blocked with his legs. McSporran's part in the equaliser was typical of his recent form - racing down the right before pulling the ball back for Devine. Devine's effort hit the post but Captain Rhino was on hand to blast home and prompt last minute hysteria amongst the Wycombe fans - Steve Brown seemed to enjoy it as well!
