Wycombe v Wigan Athletic
FA Cup 2nd Round
Saturday 20th November 1999

W
igan travel to Adams Park for an FA Cup second round clash with opponents they faced just last week at the JJB Stadium. On that occasion the Latics came from behind to win 2-1 and extend their lead at the top of Division Two. Their last visit to Wycombe saw the Wanderers grab a vital win, the goal coming from former Charlton player Paul Emblen. Emblen has not hit that kind of form again for the Chairboys and when compared with Andy Liddell, who performs a similar role for Athletic, there is certainly room for improvement.
Liddell has scored three times this season and has had 12 further attempts at goal, while the majority of Emblen’s efforts have flown wide. Both men have created two goals so far and this is an area where they can be strong. The Wigan man has made far more passes and with a better pass completion, but he has been on the pitch for considerably longer than his counterpart.
While Emblen has not made nearly as many crosses or dribbles as Liddell, his completion rates compare favourably. 36 per cent of his crosses have reached a fellow Wycombe player, and while Liddell has delivered an impressive 51 crosses, only 29 per cent have found their intended target.
There is not much to choose between the men defensively, though Emblen has made more clearances. He has also been booked three times as his tackling can be occasionally erratic. Wycombe will hope that the magic of the FA Cup helps them shake off their poor league form and progress to the third round.
