NATIONWIDE Division Two Oxford United v WYCOMBE
Saturday 4th September
Division Two

details Wycombe travelled to Oxford hoping to pick up the pieces after the previous Tuesday evening's disappointing result against Wrexham but had to settle for a point from a 0-0 draw in blistering heat at The Manor Ground. Sean Devine was still missing from the starting line-up due to his groin strain and there was no place for Chris Vinnicombe despite his return for the reserves in midweek. Oxford were without Steve Anthrobus - the big striker that Lawrie Sanchez targetted during the summer - he was suspended following a sending off against Bristol Rovers two weeks ago. Also out for Oxford was ex-Wimbledon midfielder Peter Fear and ex-Barnsley defender Steve Davis.
Victorious on their two previous league visits to Oxford, Wycombe dominated the first half kicking down the slope. Jermaine McSporran sent in a speculative shot within the first ten seconds that Oxford 'keeper Paul Lundin was glad to see go a foot wide of his right hand post. Wycombe had further chances when Jamie Bates fired a free-kick inches over on 14 minutes after Andy Baird had been felled on route to goal. Five minutes later a quick free-kick from Bates saw Bates' looping header almost catch out Lundin. McSporran should have done better with a downward header just two minutes before the break while United's best chance fell to Mark Watson but he fluffed his overhead kick following a scramble in the Wycombe box on 24 minutes.
Half-time 0-0
The second half saw Wycombe run out of steam up front - Andy Baird tiring badly as the front line kicked towards the large Wycombe contingent on the sun drenched terrace. Martin Taylor had to be on top form to prevent Derek Lilley from scoring on at least two occasions and with just five minutes left he got down swiftly to block Joey Beauchamp's powerdrive. Paul Emblen was introduced as a surprise replacement for Steve Brown mid-way through the second period as Sanchez tried to inject some fresh legs up front. On 74 minutes Emblen's low shot didn't have enough power to beat Lundin while moments later Bates put in the challenge of the game when he cut across Jamie Lambert at the last possible moment. Danny Bulman was given a run out in the final ten minutes but although Wycombe deserved their point the breakthrough never looked likely.
