With Andy Baird and Steve Brown serving one-match bans, Lawrie Sanchez gave a full debut to Danny Senda while Jermaine McSporran, Michael Simpson and Jason Cousins all stepped straight back into the side after their own suspensions. The return of Dave Carroll was the other change to the side after a back injury kept him out of the game against Bournemouth on Boxing Day. Kicking toward a boisterous Valley End, Wycombe started brightly. After just three minutes a deep cross from the left by McSporran fell to Senda but he failed to control the ball. Chesterfield's Steve Blatherwick (former loan player at Wycombe) was booked for blocking out McSporran on the edge of the area after 12 minutes and from the resulting free-kick Devine sent the ball in low only for Simpson to miss the follow-up. But Wycombe didn't have it all their own way. In the 20th minute top scorer David Reeves has a shot that was too hot to handle for Taylor but the Wycombe 'keeper did well to block Reeves' second effort from the loose ball. Then on 29 minutes Matt Lawrence's back pass let in Reeves before Tom Curtis crashed the ball against the Wycombe crossbar. Relief came for the Wycombe fans when Devine opened the scoring five minutes before the break. He made the goal from literally nothing - picking up a Dave Carroll pass before turning and breaking into the left side of the Chesterfield penalty area and firing low past Muggleton. Half-time Wycombe 1 Chesterfield 0 After the break the basement side continued to threaten- forcing a three quick corners within the opening eleven minutes of the second-half. The diminutive Steve Williams was allowed a free run on goal in the 56th minute but Taylor got down in time to smoother. Wycombe survived and after Matt Brady had been sent on for his debut in place of Danny Senda, Devine grabbed his second. The ex-Boreham Wood and Barnet striker had a hand in the goal when he played a square ball to Carroll whose right wing cross was headed home with ease by Devine. It was Devine's 15th League goal of the season and his 23rd since joining Wycombe last March. Devine's second goal killed off any hope of a fight back by John Duncan's side and when Matt Lawrence sent in a delightful right wing cross in the third minute of injury time, Dannie Bulman exposed the Chesterfield defence again when he cooly headed home. Final Score Wycombe 3 Chesterfield 0 Wycombe Team:Taylor, Lawrence, Vinnicombe, Cousins, Bates, Senda (sub 58 Brady), Simpson, Ryan (sub 88 Rogers), Carroll, McSporran (sub 70 Bulman), Devine subs not used Westhead and Harkin Att: 5,001 |
