Nationwide League Division Two WYCOMBE v Bournemouth
Sunday 26th December
Division Two
Wycombe beat Bournemouth for the first time ever at Adams Park thanks to a second-half winner from Sean Devine. With Jason Cousins, Michael Simpson and Jermaine McSporran all suspended, Wycombe were further hit when Dave Carroll and Mo Harkin cryed off late with injuries. Lawrie Sanchez brought in Lee Holsgrove and Dannie Bulman for their first starts in the Football League and continued with the 4-4-2 theme that held up so well at Bristol City.
Wycombe got the boost they needed after just eight minutes when Devine played through to Andy Baird for a clear run on goal but as Baird closed in on the penalty area Christer Warren cut the Wycombe player down and the red card was shown almost instantly by referee Phil Richards. Mark Stein showed he is a player still to be feared when he flashed a chance wide on ten minutes and Devine saw a similar chance go wide at the other end in the 20th minute. The opening goal on 26 minutes came out of the blue. Steve Brown meandered out to a left wing position and then slung in a shot (?) that left Mark Ovendale standing in The Cherries goal. Wycombe still couldn't press home the one man advantage and three minutes before the break conceeded another goal on the break. Jamie Hayter intercepted the ball in midfield and after running in from the right, unleashed a shot that burnt Martin Taylor's fingers before nestling in the Hillbottom Road End net.
Half-time Wycombe 1 Bournemouth 1
Wycombe came out more determined in the second-half. Within two minutes Devine saw a shot hit the side netting but he was on target five minutes later. Baird looked to have been fouled in the area after good build-up play from Brown and Bulman but while others looked at the ref, Devine smashed the ball home from 12 yards to claim his 13th goal of the season. Steve Brown shot high and wide on 63 minutes but it was a day that strikers from both sides will want to forget. Sanchez brought on Danny Senda for Holsgrove for the last twenty minutes after surviving a brief spell of Bournemouth pressure, Wycombe finished the stronger side. With six minutes remaining Senda sprinted down the right wing but his shot was held with ease by Ovendale, then in the final minute anothe Senda run ended with a deep cross to the far post that Devine volleyed inches past the upright.
By no means a classic but with 29 points on the board and 12th place in the table, Wycombe will go into the games with Colchester and Chesterfield knowing that a good points haul will set up a stress free second-half of the season.
Final Score Wycombe 2 Bournemouth 1
WYCOMBE TEAM: Taylor, Lawrence, Vinnicombe, Ablett, Bates, Holsgrove (sub 71 Senda), Bulman, Ryan, Brown, Baird (sub 86 Rogers), Devine subs not used Westhead, Brady and Lee Att:5,656
